Nigeria’s healthcare and pharmaceutical community is mourning the passing of one of its most revered icons, Pharm. (Sir) Ifeanyi Atueyi, a pioneering pharmacist, ethical journalist, Christian leader, and mentor, who died peacefully in the early hours of Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at the age of 85.

The National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Academy of Pharmacy (NECNAP) has described his passing as “the close of an era—but the beginning of a legacy that will echo through generations.”

In a moving tribute signed by Prof. Lere Baale, FNAPharm, President of the Academy, and Pharm. Lekan Asuni, FNAPharm, Secretary-General, the NEC remembered Sir Atueyi as “a visionary who gave voice to pharmacy” and “a patriarch of ethical journalism whose life mirrored purpose, humility, and divine calling.”

Sir Atueyi was the Founder and Publisher of Pharmanews, Nigeria’s foremost pharmaceutical and health journal, established in 1979. At a time when pharmacy practice was struggling for visibility, he created a platform that did more than inform—it inspired.

For over four decades, Pharmanews chronicled the growth, challenges, and triumphs of the profession across West Africa. “He redefined health communication in Nigeria,” NECNAP said. “His pen was dipped in wisdom, and his platform became a mirror reflecting our collective aspirations.”

A Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (FPSN), Nigerian Academy of Pharmacy (FNAPharm), and the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (FPCPharm), Sir Atueyi wore his honours with humility and used them as platforms to uplift others. “He mentored thousands,” said Prof. Baale. “His books bridged professional knowledge with spiritual insight. He believed that every platform—journalism, pharmacy, or faith—could be a pulpit for transformation.”

Sir Atueyi institutionalised the celebration of pharmacy’s pioneers through heartfelt tributes and historical interviews. He ensured that the profession’s legends were honoured while still alive and their stories preserved. “He taught us to honour our elders and to walk in their footsteps,” said Pharm. Asuni. “In preserving history, he ignited aspiration.”

An active patron of the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigeria Students (PANS), Sir Atueyi was described as a father figure to generations of young pharmacists. “He believed in our future,” said Blessing Oghenekevwe, a recent graduate and former PANS national officer. “He encouraged us to combine professional excellence with spiritual integrity, “ she further said.

Born on October 1, 1939, Sir Atueyi’s life story mirrored the nation’s journey—one of resilience, vision, and destiny. He was a devoted husband to Lady Joan Atueyi, a father of five, grandfather to 12 children , and a guiding light to an entire profession. His home was a haven of simplicity, faith, and wisdom. Even in his 80s, Sir Atueyi continued to write, speak, and engage with professionals—online and offline.

He remained a regular presence at conferences, webinars, and pharmacy events. “He never stopped learning, and he never stopped serving,” said Prof. Baale. Knight of the Order of Saint Christopher (KSC), seasoned author, reformer, and servant-leader—Sir Ifeanyi Atueyi now rests in eternal peace.

Baale further said, “The Lord whom he served faithfully has called him home. But his life—marked by purpose, discipline, and grace—continues to inspire generations.” As Nigeria mourns, the pharmacy profession rises in his honour. His legacy is etched in print, in lives, and in the standards he raised. Adieu, Pharm. (Sir) Ifeanyi Atueyi. Heaven receives a faithful servant. Nigeria salutes a noble icon.
