The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Joash Amupitan (SAN), has reaffirmed his resolve to work hand in hand with the National Assembly to establish a credible, fair, and transparent electoral process across the country.
Amupitan disclosed this at the 56th Annual National Conference of the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT), where the Federal University of Lokoja conferred an honour on him in recognition of his “dedication, hard work, and inspiration to many.”
Describing the gathering as a “momentous occasion,” the INEC chairman underscored the essential role of law in shaping orderly societies and guiding national development.
He said, “Law is not merely a set of rules but a foundation upon which societies build their progress.”
Amupitan explained that electoral systems are deeply rooted in legal structures, adding that he is personally committed to contributing to the ongoing review and amendment of the Electoral Act to strengthen the framework governing elections in Nigeria.
He said, “I will begin my participation in the National Assembly to ensure that we develop an electoral process and laws that you, I, and all Nigerians can be proud of.”
Amupitan noted that one of the core aims of the reform agenda is to minimise post-election disputes and reduce the flood of litigations that often trail election outcomes.
“Let us not see electoral petitions in court,” he said, emphasizing the urgency of establishing a just and transparent system capable of commanding public trust and confidence.
