By Eucharia Nkiruka Ezeumeh (Ph.D)

I am thrilled to share my remarkable journey of achieving a Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology and Genomics, a milestone that marks a significant accomplishment in my career as an academic, researcher, and clinical medical laboratory scientist.

My academic journey began at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), where I obtained my first degree. I then proceeded to Nnamdi Azikiwe University College of Health Sciences for a graduate internship in Medical Laboratory Science, becoming a certified medical laboratory scientist in 2009. I gained practical experience through hands-on training at Fezi Medical Laboratory, Onitsha, Anambra State.

My professional journey took a significant turn when I was appointed to head a medical laboratory unit at St. Martin’s Hospital, Ugwuagba Obosi. This experience laid the foundation for my future endeavors. While on my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program between 2005-2009, I had a career opportunity at Cutix Plc, where I quickly rose through the ranks from Quality Inspection Staff to Head of Recruitment and Remuneration, and Welfare Administration.

My experience in the private sector exposed me to various training and personal development programs that helped me master essential skills in administration and technology incubation. This exposure sparked an entrepreneurial instinct in me, leading to the establishment of my own diagnostic laboratory, Cheznik Medical Diagnostic Lab and Research Centre, now registered under the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) as Cheznik Specialist Lab.

The laboratory has served as a technology incubation center, facilitating numerous research works. In 2012, I was employed by Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in the University Medical Centre. While working, I pursued my Master’s degree, and subsequently, my Ph.D. began in 2020.

Combining my new role as an educator, a higher postgraduate student, a clinical practitioner, and a family administrator, married with children, presented seemingly insurmountable challenges. However, with unwavering faith and trust, I braved the journey, pressing forward. The hurdles and burdens all bent at His feet when, on December 14, 2024, I completed my external defense and was awarded the highest degree in academics, becoming a certified Ph.D. holder.

I acknowledge the leadership of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University under the innovative leadership of the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha ( fnipr). Her three-Vs mantra has revolutionized the institution, taking its prided place amongst all as a great citadel of learning anchored in Science and Technology.

I salute the academic excellence and mentorship of the academic staff of COOU, particularly my mentors, Prof. Mrs. Chinyelu N. Umeaku, Prof. C. Chukwurah, and Prof. Okpalla. I appreciate the support of my family and friends, who were my pillars of strength throughout the program.

On a somber note, I pray for the rest in peace of my dear ones who shared this dream with me but did not live to witness its fulfillment, my big brother, Late Mr. Uchenna Natty Ifeanyichukwu, and Cynthia Chinazo Onwukem.

To the students of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology (FAHSSAN), whom I have mentored as the staff advisor for years, this new feather means impact at a higher level for you. I dedicate this honor to all men and women worldwide who are passionate about learning and value creation.

This achievement marks the beginning of a new journey to making an impact and creating values. I am excited to continue sharing my knowledge and expertise with the world.
