…Many feared dead, several others injured
Suspected herdsmen have again attacked Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu state. The suspected herdsmen attacked Opanda village in Nimbo community.
The attack which happened at the early hours of Monday left an unspecified number of people dead, with several others injured.
The attackers who are suspected to be Fulani herdsmen used machetes to inflict different degrees of injuries on many people in the village, a development that allegedly led to the death of some of the victims.
A source who spoke to TheIdeal disclosed that the villagers were still searching for more victims of the Monday attack in the farms and bushes.
The source revealed to our correspondent that about eight persons in critical condition were initially rushed to Bishop Shanahan Hospital in Nsukka from where they were referred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu.
The villager claimed that many people died during the attack but could not disclose the number of persons that lost their lives.
Our correspondent reports that border Communities dominated by farmers have been witnessing series of attacks from suspected herdsmen since the Nimbo Community attack in 2016 that led to the death of many people.
It would be recalled that in 2016 a similar attack was carried out by Fulani herdsmen killing several number of people in Ukpabi-Nimbo in same Local Government Area.
Reacting to the alleged attack, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Daniel Ndukwe said, “Following an information received at Nimbo Police Division in the early hours of today, 26/07/2021, alleging that yet-to-be identified hoodlums attacked some persons in a location at Opanda Village in Nimbo Community of Uzo-Uwani LGA, Police Operatives attached to the Division raced to the Scene and found 3 young men with degrees of machete cuts.
“They were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are responding to treatment.
“Meanwhile, the area is calm, while the Commissioner of Police, CP, Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, psc, has ordered the conduct of thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and bring the perpetrators to book. He also calls on residents of the area to remain calm and assist the Police with useful information”, he stated.
