The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has said that the report of the Special Investigator on the activities of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will be out soon.
Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had in July appointed Jim Obazee as a Special Investigator to probe the activities of the CBN and other related entities.
Akume, at a World Press Conference on the 63rd Independence Anniversary of Nigeria in Abuja, told the audience that most of the problems confronting the nation were as a result of bad governance.
The former Benue State Governor stated that the present administration is confronting the challenges random square.
He recalled that when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu came on board, he took a very sound decision at the CBN.
The immediate past Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs added that the singular act led to massive improvement in the capital market.
“As experts have told us, something that has never happened in the past fifteen years.
“We have a new team at the CBN and a Special Investigator has been with the CBN for sometime now and his report will soon be released and Nigerians will know what really went on and what brought us to where we are today,” Akume said.
On the removal of fuel subsidy by the Tinubu’s administration, Akume also said: “We have repeatedly said that the fuel subsidy regime was a scam. But the courage to confront it was always lacking until this government came to power. Some of these things will be well encapsulated in the report that Nigerians will soon see. Things really, really went bad.”
Akume who also touched on the issue of tax reforms, said there is no where in the world where you want the economy to grow in the absence of a clear tax regime.
According to Akume, “Double taxation, triple taxation, whatever you think about, was the order of the day.
“But this has not been eliminated and that is why all these things are geared towards accountability. Transparency and accountability.
“This government has nothing to hide and that is why it is doing what it has started to do so that you will know and believe because they say “seen is believing.” It was that bad and we are looking at critical infrastructure.”
While also saying that the issue of students loan was a policy to be applauded, Akume further said with the development, students will have access to loans.
He refuted reports that school fees, particularly government-owned universities were increasing, saying that President Tinubu said no to increase in school fees in public institutions.
“This is part of efforts to assist parents to educate their children in our educational institutions,” Akume explained.
