The House of Representatives ad-hoc Committee on Constitution Review has voted against the creation of State Police as contained in its policy work papers.
The provision for the creation of State Police was stepped down following the voting of 14 members against it while only 11 voted in its favour.
Chairman of the Committee and Deputy Speaker of the House, Rep Ahmed Idris Wase had noted that the provision had sailed through in the Senate.
The ad-hoc Committee at its renewed sitting also approved the creation of 111 additional legislative seats in the National Assembly to be occupied solely by women beginning from the next general election.
It also recommended the creation of two additional seats per senatorial zone reserved for women in state Houses of Assembly and the FCT.
At the meeting also attended by its Consultants, the Committee adopted changes to section 48, 49, 71, and 91 which deals with composition of the Senate, the House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly to create additional seats for women.
According to the Deputy Speaker, the Committee’s Report will be submitted to the entire House for adoption before the end of February, stressing the need to painstakingly go through the document without slowing down the need of amending the Constitution to place the country on the path to progress.
