A Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted and sentenced Bilikisu Lawal to 12 months imprisonment for drug dealing.

Lawal of Odofin, Ebute Onijegi Iworo in the Badagry area of Lagos, claimed to be battling Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

The convict was sentenced by Justice Ayokunle Faji, following her plea of “guilty” to a one-count charge of unauthorised dealing in 5.0 kilogrammes of Cannabis Sativa popularly called marijuana.

The charge was filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The NDLEA prosecutor, Mr Femi Adebayo, informed the court that Lawal was arrested with the prohibited substance on November 2, 2022, at her house in Odofin, Ebute Onijegi Iworo.

According to the NDLEA, the offence is contrary to section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act.

Following her plea and conviction, Lawal prayed for leniency, telling the court that she was an HIV patient with no one to care for her.

The convict said she used the proceeds realised from selling the narcotic drug to fend for herself, her children and her aged mother.
