Emefiele

Suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele was re-arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Tuesday, following a tussle with officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) on the premises of a Federal High Court in Lagos, sitting in Ikoyi.

The re-arrest occurred after Justice Nicholas Oweibo granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N20 million and ordered him to be remanded at the correctional centre pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions.

Shortly after the court ruling, DSS operatives positioned their Hilux Pick Up van used in bringing Emefiele to court, suggesting they intended to take him back to their detention centre.

Emefiele’s lead counsel and other lawyers raised an alarm about the planned re-arrest, but when the prison officials attempted to take him into custody, a clash ensued between the DSS and prison officials.

Emefiele’s lawyers decided to avoid a gun battle and reluctantly allowed the DSS to disobey the court order and take custody of their client.

The DSS then led the suspended CBN governor out of the courtroom into their waiting vehicle at 03:03 pm.
