…Viral report on CBN fake, misleading – DSS

The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has resumed duty after his annual vacation abroad.

Emefiele, who proceeded on leave in December 2022, resumed work on Monday and took control of the apex bank and its daily supervisory role on banking activities in the country

The CBN’s Director, Corporate Communications, Mr Osita Nwanisobi, also disclosed in a statement made available to TheIdeal News on Monday that Emefiele has resumed with vigour to discharge his responsibilities ahead of the first Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) for the year.

The statement reads in part, “The CBN Governor resumed with renewed vigour to perform his duty ahead of the first Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the year scheduled for January 23 to 24, 2023.

“Mr. Emefiele remains committed to performing the task before him in line with his oath of office and the policy direction of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“While thanking the public for keeping faith with the Bank, we urge Nigerians to continue to support the policies of the Bank aimed at ensuring a stable financial system and the Nigerian economy in general.

Certain online medium had claimed that the CBN Governor would be arrested on arrival at the airport while claiming that the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) had invaded the CBN on Monday.

But the DSS has debunked media reports over its purported invasion of CBN, saying that the report is not only fake but misleading.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer, DSS, National Headquarters, Abuja, Peter Afunanya also described the viral reports which also claimed the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele had been arrested as “fake news”.

In the statement made available to TheIdeal News, Afunanya said, “The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to the false news making the round that its operatives invaded the Central Bank of Nigeria and arrested its Governor, today 16/1/23.

“This is fake news and quite misleading.”

But the DSS’s denial came amid reports from CBN that Emefiele has resumed work after his trip overseas.

Emefiele has been in the eye of the storm after reports emerged that the DSS had launched an investigation into his activities allegedly bordering on economic crimes.
