The Federal Government on Tuesday applied to withdraw the alleged illegal possession of firearms case it filed against the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, before the Federal High Court in Lagos.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Bakodo Abubakar, informed Justice Nicholas Oweibo that the request to withdraw the alleged possession of firearms against Emefiele was sequel to the result of further investigations.
Abubakar stated this in his oral application, asking the court to grant the request.
But the lead lawyer to Emefiele’, Joseph Daudu (SAN) opposed Abubakar, insisting that since the Federal Government is in disobedience of the court’s order granting Emefiele bail, its application should not be taken.
Justice Oweibo had on July 25, admitted Emefiele to a N20 million bail on a two-count charge of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
The judge also remanded Emefiele at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, pending the perfection of his bail conditions.
But the DSS rearrested Emefiele after altercation with NCoS officials on the court’s premises.
Meanwhile, the Federal government has filed a fresh 20-count charge against Emefiele in Abuja.
Speaking with journalists after Tuesday’s proceedings, Abubakar said the fresh charge was filed before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.
According to him, one of the counts accuses Emefiele of “conferring unlawful advantages”.
