In a seismic political shift ahead of the 2027 general election, former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned from the PDP, the major opposition part in the country
Atiku, a founding member of the PDP, cited a fundamental departure from the party’s original principles as the reason for his exit.
His resignation was contained in a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of PDP’s Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State.
The letter was made public on Wednesday via a post on X by his Special Assistant on Media, Abdul Rasheeth.
Atiku wrote, “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect”.
He expressed appreciation for the opportunities the PDP gave him — including serving two full terms as Nigeria’s Vice President and twice flying the party’s presidential flag.
But he lamented that the party has strayed too far from its founding ideals, saying that, “It is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision. The current trajectory the party has taken diverges from the foundational principles we stood for. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”
The former Vice President’s exit comes on the heels of confirmed reports that he is co-founding a new political front, the Alliance Democratic Congress (ADC) — a coalition platform aimed at building a united opposition to challenge the ruling APC in 2027.
