…Names board members for agency 5 years after
President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed George Abang Ekpungu, as the Secretary to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Ekpungu’s appointment, which indicates the removal of Mr Olanipekun Olukoyede, former secretary to the commission, is for a fresh tenure of five years.
Spokesman to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr Umar Gwandu, disclosed this in a statement made available on Monday night.
Gwandu further stated that the President has appointed new board members for the EFCC, which is expected to be chaired by Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa.
The board members are Luqman Muhammad (South South), Anumba Adaeze (South East), Kole Raheem Adesina (North Central) and Yahya Muhammad (North East).
The appointment is in line with Section 2 (1) and Section 4 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act, 2004.
Incidentally, the President is naming the board members after five years as he did not appoint any board member during the tenure of the former Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu.
The EFCC has been without board members since 2015.
Meanwhile, Buhari has directed that the names of the fresh appointees should be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
