Senator representing Kano South Senatorial district, Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila has officially confirmed his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), saying that the move is motivated by his commitment to the welfare of his constituents.
Sumaila also confirmed the defection through a text message sent to him Wednesday night, seeking his comment on what he earlier posted on his Facebook page.
“Yes, it is true, the rumours regarding my defection are accurate. All politics is local, and my primary concern has always been, and remains, the welfare of my immediate constituency,” he stated.
The Kano Senator emphasized that his decision was guided by the desire to improve the lives of his people and ensure their long-term prosperity.
He said, “I am resolutely determined to advance the lives of my people, ensuring their needs are met and their future is secured.”
Though details regarding his new political alignment are yet to be made public, Sumaila’s defection marks a significant development in Kano’s political landscape, where shifts in allegiance often signal deeper undercurrents within party structures and influence future electoral dynamics.
Reports have shown that he had parted ways with the red cap movement – Kwankwasiyya and the NNPP with the book logo loyal to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
It is instructive to note that Sumaila, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum and Ali Madakin Gini were suspended by the Kwankwaso-led NNPP as announced by the State party Chairman, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa for alleged disloyalty.
But the trio have rejected the suspension, adding that they are not with the party but with the fruits and basket logo now led by a factional Chairman in the state, Senator Jibril El-Masud Doguwa.
