The Chancellor, Igbinedion University Okada (IUO), Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, has urged the Governing Council and management of the institution to work effectively toward making the university globally competitive.

Igbinedion made the call during the 2020 Retreat for Governing Councils and Management of IUO in Okada on Monday.

He said the theme of Retreat “Charting the Way for Global Competitiveness” aimed at confronting challenges of universities of the 21st century.

“The timing of the organisation of the retreat during the COVID-19 lockdown is quite significant.

“For instance, the new calls for less emphasis on face to face learning and more interactive modes of delivery with lecturers essentially serving as facilitators should be urgently worked on.

“In this way, students will be educated with tools to confront and solve societal problems of the present and the future.

“I expect to see amongst others the fostering of a sense of community among stakeholders, a refocused workforce with improved productivity, greater bonding and team building, new perspectives and shared values,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor of IUO, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye said that the retreat would be an eye opener to the strategic plan for 2021 to 2025 to strategise for achieving target goals cum roles and responsibilities of key administrative heads on information.

“There is no gain saying the fact that organisation often fail if they do not periodically or continuously renew themselves,” he said.

He said the retreat was an attempt at institutional renewal to address the internal and external triggers of change.

Ezemonye said the retreat had been designed as a deliberate strategy to up the university’s performance in all ramifications with a view to ensuring its long term survival.
