A former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mustapha Balogun, is dead.
Aged 74, the former IGP died on Thursday, ew days to his 75th birthday.
According to family sources, Balogun was said to have died at a hospital in Lekki, Lagos at about 8:30 pm on Thursday after a brief illness.
Born on August 25, 1947, in Ila Orangun, Osun State, Balogun was appointed as the IGP in March 2002.
Balogun was a member of Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police Course 3 and worked in various Police commands across the Federation.
He was also a Principal Staff Officer to the former IGP, Muhammadu Gambo, Deputy Commission of Police, Edo State, the pioneer Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command.
He also served as a Commissioner of Police in Rivers and Abia states command.
He was appointed Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone One, Kano State, the position he was holding when promoted to the IGP on March 6, 2002
Balogun, who was convicted in 2005 on eight charges of corruption, had his corruption case reopened in 2020.
After his resignation from office, he was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged involvement in corrupt practices while about N1billion in different bank accounts were linked to him.
Balogun later entered into a plea bargain with the while he was sentenced to six months imprisonment and directed to pay a fine of N4 million.
