The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Sunday night, declared Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Kogi governorship election.

The INEC Returning Officer, Prof John Urama from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, who made the announcement at about 10.20pm, stated that Ododo won the election, having satisfied the law and necessary requirements.

Urama added that Ododo scored 446,237 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Muritala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), who polled 259,052 votes while Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came distant third with 46,362 votes.

The returning officer also disclosed that the total votes cast during the election were 791,890, saying that the total valid votes were 782,289 while 9,601 votes were rejected.

Urama further disclosed that the number of cancelled votes in some areas where election could not hold were 16,247.

He added that the development could not substantially affect the outcome of the results.
