Says only regret is not having opportunity to tell bandits ‘enough is enough’

As Sen Wamakko inaugurates bypass road in Rivers

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has said that leadership is not about the political party but the individual capacity and the passion of an elected public officer to deliver dividends of democracy and make a positive impact on the people.

He added Nigeria’s problems can be effectively addressed if leaders are truly committed to serving the people, saying that his resolve to effect dynamic governance would not be in doubt even if was not a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Wike stated  this on Tuesday during  the inauguration of the dualised Ogbunuabali-Eastern bypass road in Rivers.

It is instructive to note the road was inaugurated by former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, who is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said, “Leadership is not about the party, leadership is about the individual. Party is only a vehicle to actualise your ambition, to be able to tell your people ‘I have this capacity; I have this quality to render services to you.

“If you take me away today from PDP to another party, I will still perform. So, it is not because I’m in PDP that I’m performing. It is because I have that passion for my people. It is because I have the commitment to serve my people.

“Take me to YPP and allow me to become whatever I will become there, I will perform. Take me to any party, I will perform. So, it is not the party that makes you to perform.

“I challenge everybody. The problem we have in this country today is that we don’t have people who have that passion, who want to serve their people.”

The Rivers Governor also spoke about the increasing bandits attacks in the country, saying that his only regret is that he did not have the opportunity to tell the bandits that ‘enough is enough’.

He said “The only regret I have is that I don’t have the opportunity to tell bandits ‘enough is enough’. If I have the opportunity, the bandits know their time will be gone. It’s unfortunate I don’t have it.

“But this one I have, I will use it and serve my people so that they will be happy and know that they deserve the best. ”

Wike has been having a running battle with the PDP, following the conclusion of the presidential primary election where the  former Vice President Atiku Abubakar polled 371 votes to emerge as the PDP presidential candidate and defeated  the Rivers Governor who came second with 237 votes.

Atiku further stirred the hornet’s nest when he picked Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate instead of Wike.
