Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Dr Muhammad Inname, has disclosed that about 56 people have died since  the outbreak of Gastroenteritis in the state.

Dr Inname  stated this while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting in Sokoto on Thursday.

Stressing that the Gastroenteritis affected 22 out of the 23 local government areas of the State, Dr Inmame listed the worst hit LGAs to include, Dange Shuni , Illela, Gwadabawa and Bodinga.

He also stated that the Governor Aminu  Tambuwal-led government has procured drugs worth millions of naira and distributed same to all the 23 local government areas of the State to help prevent and control the disease.

Listing other measures taken to curtail further spread of the disease, Dr Inname said Tambuwal has directed all the 23 local government councils chairmen to be holding stakeholders meeting to sensitize their people on preventive measures.

He said, “These council chairmen have also been directed to ensure daily monitoring and  supervision of their domain and report back to the state government for prompt action.

“This is in addition to the call on members of the public to clean their environment and ensure self hygienes culture at all times”.

On her part, the Sokoto State Commissioner for Science and Technical Education, Dr Kulu Haruna,  said the State  Exco has considered and approved the purchase of 2,500 double space beds and 5,000 mattresses at the cost of N437.5 million to be distributed to the science schools across the state.

Speaking in the same  vein, the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof Bashir Garba, said the State  Exco  has considered and approved a law establishing the new Shehu Shagari University of Education.

Prof Garba also stated that the State Exco  has constituted a committee of experts to advice it on the feasibility of establishing the university.

He added the state government has received the report of the committee, hence the approval of the law establishing the university as required by the established procedure of the National University Commission (NUC).
