Zamfara state governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has pardoned 46 inmates who were convicted by the court of law and remanded in Gusau.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Barr Junaidu Aminu Kaura, disclosed this while addressing newsmen at the state headquarters of the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Gusau, Friday.
According to him, those who were pardoned included 30 inmates who were serving different sentences ranging from 20 years to 6 month imprisonment, 9 lifers and 11 inmates who were on death sentences, respectively.
The commissioner stated that the pardoning of the inmates was based on the recommendation by the prerogative of mercy committee, under his chairmanship.
He said, their pardoning was approved by the governor based on the provision of section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria ,1999 as amended, which gave the governor power to pardon or remit any convict serving his or her imprisonment term.
The commissioner tasked them to be good ambassadors in their society and not to allow themselves to be part of any criminality anymore.
He pointed out that the sum of N20, 000 was given to all the 46 inmates who were pardoned for them to be reunited with their relatives.
