A legal luminary and human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), has berated the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, saying that under his watch, the CBN collected about N3.2 trillion from various sources but printed N402 billion when it tried to phase out the old N200, N500 and N100 notes with new ones.

Falana spoke on Monday during his interview with Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme.

According to Falana, the currency redesign under Emefiele led to a scarcity of the naira currency at the time.

The Senior Advocate also disclosed that in response to distressing events that followed the naira redesign policy, he took a legal action by invoking the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, submitting a request to the CBN to disclose the exact amount of money that had been printed.

He said, “I had to write to the CBN under the Freedom of Information Act to know how much was printed.

“To my utter dismay, the CBN collected about N3.2 trillion from customers and the bank only printed N402 billion.”
Falana also emphasised the urgency of utilizing the law to combat corruption and gather essential information to protect the interests of the people.

He said, “We must take advantage of the law and use the law to enforce corruption and get information to defend our people.”
