A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Lead Generation Initiative (LGI), on Monday started a training for youths in Oyo State on leadership and good governance.
Speaking at the beginning of the training anchored by YIAGA Africa in Ibadan, Mr Shina Abiola-Peller, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of LGI, said the initiative was aimed at achieving a new Nigeria.
The programme, with the theme, “ Engaging for a New Nigeria” had participants drawn from all the wards and council areas of the state.
Abiola-Peller said that the training became necessary to build and nurture new leaders for a better Nigeria.
“We are a non-governmental and non-profit organisation committed to creating opportunities for young people to channel their creativity, energy and aspirations to add value to their communities.
“We develop the interests of youth in governance, social inclusion and participation in the democratic and political processes.
“Our programmes are community targeted to galvanise, train, support and raise the voices and stake of the Nigerian youths,” he said.
Abiola-Peller, who is also a member of the House of Representatives, Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola and Iwajowa Constituency, said the NGO was building young people that could take responsibility for fixing their communities and country through participation in the socio-political process.
He said the two-day training would equip the youths to discover their potentials and the roles expected of them in nation building and participation.
The LGI chairman added that participants would be armed with necessary tools needed for leadership.
He said that the LGI training would be replicated in all the 36 states of the Federation, saying, “all hands must be on deck to ensure that the country is governed by the best hands”.
Also speaking, the Executive Director of YIAGA Africa, Mr Samson Itodo, told participants that the goal of the training was mainly on leadership training as a tool for good governance.
