The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended 11 Justices of the Court of Appeal (JCAs) to President Bola Tinubu for approval and consequent elevation to the Supreme Court Bench.
The NJC’s Director of Information, Mr Soji Oye, disclosed this in a statement made available to TheIdeal News on Wednesday.
The 11 JCAs are Justice Jummai Hannatu Sankey; Justice Chidiebere Nwaoma Uwa; Justice Chioma Egondu Nwosu-Iheme; Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani; Justice Moore Aseimo A. Adumein; Hon. Justice Obande Festus Ogbuinya; Justice Stephen Jonah Adah; Justice Habeeb Adewale O. Abiru; Justice Jamilu Yammama Tukur; Justice Abubakar Sadiq Umar and Justice Mohammed Baba Idris.
With the expected approval by President Tinubu, the 11 JCAs will also appear before Senate for confirmation before they will be sworn as Justices of the Supreme Court (JSCs).
The development will now make it possible for the Supreme Court to have the full compliment of 21 JSCs as against the current situation where the apex court has been depleted to 10 JSCs.
Soji Oye further disclosed that the NJC had at its 104 Meeting on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, considered the list of candidates presented by its Interview Committee.
He added that at the end of deliberations, the NJC recommended the names of successful candidates as Heads of Courts and other Judicial Officers for the Federal and State Courts in Nigeria.
According to the Director of Information, the NJC also recommended the elevation of a Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Mohammed Ahmed Rahmat to the Court of Appeal.
He further disclosed that Justice Joel Filibus has been appointed as the Chief Judge of Taraba State while Justice Umar Abubakar has been appointed as the Chief Judge of Kebbi State.

The statement reads in part, “All recommended candidates to the Supreme Court Bench would be sworn-in after the approval of their recommendation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the subsequent confirmation of their appointment by the Senate.
“The various Heads of Court recommended would also be sworn-in upon the approval of their appointment by their various State Governors and subsequent confirmation of same by their respective State Houses of Assembly.”
