Nigerians have expressed outrage over the killing of Dr. Chike Akunyili, husband to late former Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, who was killed by unknown gunmen.

While the identities of the killers are yet to be ascertained, Nigerians have expressed disappointment over deteriorating security in the South- Eastern part of the country

Theideal gathered that Dr. Akunyili, Proprietor and Chief Medical Director of one of the largest medical institutions in Enugu, St. Leo’s Hospital, was shot dead on Tuesday evening along Enugu – Onitsha Old Road.

Commenting on the sad situation, a security expert, Okechukwu Nwanguma, said, “So sad to read about the killing of late Prof Dora Akunyili’s husband yesterday in Anambra State by armed men.

“Obviously and sadly, Nigerians are defenceless and under the siege of both state and non state armed criminals.”

It was gathered that the late Akubuilo was killed on his way back from a meeting of the University of Nigeria Nsukka Alumni Association (UNAA) where the late Dora was honoured with an award

The event that the late Dr. Akunyili attended at the Sharon Hall, All Saints Cathedral, Onitsha, was organised by UNAA, Onitsha Branch.

A source at the meeting said of the late Dr. Akunyili: “He spoke glowingly about Dora and made a donation of N500,000 to the association.

He was there with his son, Obum, now working with Anambra state government.

“We saw them off to the car and it was emotional when Obum hugged him tight as both of them separated to join their respective vehicles.”
