*Dunchi Lar ‘ll get consular support by Nigerian Mission in Dubai- NIDCOM
The Federal Government through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has disclosed that a Nigerian lady, Ms Dunchi Lar, who was convicted under United Arab Emirates (UAE) laws for recording and circulating “offensive” video on social media, is entitled to right of appeal against the judgement.
NIDCOM further assured Dunchi Lar of necessary moral and consular support by the Nigerian Mission in Dubai.
Lar was sentenced on October 12 while there is a provision under UAE Cyber Crime Law that allows her to seek redress within 15 days.
NIDCOM’s Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun, gave the clarification in a statement made available to TheIdeal on Sunday.
It is instructive to note that under the UAE cyber crime law, taking a video or photograph of someone without his/her consent and posting such on social media is an offence punishable with one year jail term or a fine of between approximately $69,000 and $137,000 or both jail term and fine.
NIDCOM also disclosed that Lar made and tweeted the viral video of the UAE official at the Airport.
The commission then said, “ This law also applies to eavesdropping, recording, photographing, or disclosing audio or video communication of a person without his/her permission, taking photographs or videos of a dead person or accident victim without such person’s consent.”
