Following the signing into law of 16 constitutional amendment bills by President Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has described it as a welcome development.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said granting the states more autonomy in key areas like electricity, railways, and the judiciary, will empower states like Lagos to take charge of its own growth.
He described the Constitutional Alteration Bill No.33 as a historic move that will grant states the authority to regulate electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.
He said, “This will create a Lagos Electricity Market, leading to increased access to electricity, investments and job opportunities.
Speaking further, Sanwo-Olu believed the new bills will promote efficiency, leading to better service delivery.
He added that in a proactive step the Lagos State Electricity Policy was launched, to provide an integrated resource plan and legal framework to establish the Lagos Electricity Market.
Sanwo-Olu also committed to achieving 1GW of solar energy in Lagos by 2030, stating that the State has engaged World Bank for suitable funding.
In the area of devolution of powers for railways under the Constitution Fifth Alteration Bill No.32, Sanwo-Olu said he was of the view that it was a significant move for promoting local economic growth and development.
According to him, the development will open up investment opportunities and improve the transportation of goods and services.
