The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has made a strong appeal for an end to divisive politics in Nigeria, urging political leaders to prioritise national unity over personal or party interests.
Abbas made the remarks during a goodwill message at the wedding reception of the daughter of former Gombe state governor and current Senator representing Gombe North, Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo.
The colourful ceremony, held in Gombe, attracted top dignitaries from across the country, including more than 70 senators.
“We must see ourselves as Nigerians before anything else. It is time to end bitter politics and build the nation together,” the Speaker declared, drawing loud applause from guests at the event.
He emphasised that Nigeria’s future depends on the willingness of its leaders to rise above partisan divides and act in the interest of all citizens.
In the same spirit, Senate President Godswill Akpabio echoed the call for national unity, highlighting the urgency of prayers and collective efforts toward lasting peace and security.
“Gombe is a peaceful state. We have over 70 senators here today to celebrate with our children. I want to commend the Governor of Gombe state for following in the footsteps of his predecessors in developing the state,” Akpabio said.
While offering his blessings to the newlywed couple, he praised Senator Dankwambo for his role as a bridge-builder in the National Assembly, describing him as a “unifier” committed to promoting harmony across political and ethnic lines.
In his welcome address, Gombe state governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya thanked the dignitaries who honoured the occasion and emphasized the need to foster national cohesion beyond political affiliations.
“This event reminds us of the beauty of unity. We must continue to work together regardless of party lines to strengthen our democracy and build a better Nigeria,” Governor Yahaya noted.
Senator Dankwambo, visibly elated, expressed gratitude to God for the success of the day and thanked the Senate President, the Speaker, Governor Yahaya, and all other distinguished guests for their overwhelming support and goodwill.
The event was not just a celebration of love but also a moment of reflection on the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence in Nigeria’s political landscape.
