The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN), has stated that the Federal Government will bring back to Nigeria, a Yoruba Nation agitator, Mr Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, as he is expected to face a treason charge in Nigeria  after his prosecution in Benin Republic.

AGF Malami disclosed this on Monday during a Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme which was monitored in Abuja.

Speaking on Igboho’s matter on Monday, the AGF said his case is being prosecuted in a foreign country on the grounds of his alleged breaching of Benin Republic laws.

He said, “We’ll allow the law of a nation that was indeed breached takes its natural course and then perhaps indeed thereafter bring him back home after the conclusion of the trial for the purpose of facing the Nigerian law that was accordingly breached.

“The position of things is that we are not interfering in aborting the existing prosecution of the foreign land.”

Theideal recalls that Sunday Igboho was declared wanted by the Department of State Services (DSS), following his alleged involvement in treason and stockpiling of arms to destabilise Nigeria.

But Igboho has vehemently denied the allegation and escaped to the neighbouring Benin Republic in July 2021.

But he was arrested by the Interpol at a Benin airport when he reportedly tried to board a Germany-bound flight.

Incidentally, Igboho has been remanded in a prison in Benin Republic for over six months where he is reportedly facing trial for immigration-related offences.

Igboho’s travails was further confounded on Sunday when his lead lawyer, Chief Yomi Aliyu (SAN), disclosed that the Benin Republic has extended his detention for another six months

The Senior Advocate said: “Contrary to what was speculated in the news by a lawyer, the government of the Republic de Benin has renewed the incarceration of Chief Sunday Adeyemo (a.k.a Igboho Oosa) for another six months even though there is no criminal charge in their file in Cotonou and without extradition request from Nigeria.”
