The suspended traditional ruler of Orile-Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, has been remanded at the Ilaro Correctional Centre in Ogun State after failing to meet his bail conditions.

The spokesperson for the correctional facility, Yinka Odukoya, confirmed this development on Wednesday, stating that the monarch remained in custody as he had yet to perfect his bail.

“Yes, he is in our custody, which means he has been unable to meet the bail conditions granted by the court. However, as soon as he does, he will be released,” Odukoya told The Punch Online.

The Ogun State Police Command arraigned Oba Ogunjobi on Tuesday over a viral video in which he was seen assaulting a 73-year-old man, Abraham Areola.

According to the charge sheet (MH2b8c/2025), the suspended monarch faces charges of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.

The charges state that on January 21, 2025, at Sojuolu Street in the Ifo Magisterial District, the monarch and others (who are still at large) conspired to commit assault and engaged in actions likely to disturb public order.

The court also heard that Ogunjobi allegedly slapped Areola on the face and ear before forcing him to kneel in public, an act deemed unlawful under the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

Appearing before Magistrate F. A. Iroko, the accused pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The court granted him bail at N10 million, requiring two sureties who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction. The case was adjourned to March 6 for further hearing.

A video of the assault, which surfaced online, sparked widespread outrage. The footage showed the elderly victim kneeling on the road while the monarch berated him with accusations and threats.

One of the monarch’s aides was also seen striking Areola and forcing him to prostrate.

Following public condemnation, the Ogun State government swiftly suspended Oba Ogunjobi from his position.

In reaction, the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Ogun State lauded the government’s prompt action.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Comrade Solomon Bankole, the group condemned the monarch’s actions and demanded his full prosecution.

Similarly, the state Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) commended the authorities for ensuring justice.

The PCRC Chairman, Samson Kunle Popoola, also urged law enforcement to arrest the individual who physically assaulted the victim in the video.

As the legal proceedings continue, the case has reignited discussions on the abuse of power by public figures and the need for justice for vulnerable citizens.
