The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, has dismissed allegations that the Tax Reform Bills are being hurriedly passed through the National Assembly for ulterior motives.

The SSA further disclosed that the Tax Reform Bills are the product of 14 months of rigorous effort involving over 80 professionals from various sectors and regions across Nigeria.

Ajayi, who stated this in his official X account on Monday, described such claims as “disingenuous,” emphasizing the extensive work that went into the proposed reforms.

He wrote, “It is very disingenuous to say that the Tax Reform Bills…are being rushed through the National Assembly for ulterior motives.”

He further criticized comparisons to the delayed passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), which took over two decades to become law.

According to Ajayi, the prolonged delay in passing the PIB cost Nigeria substantial revenue, investments, and job opportunities in the oil and gas sector.

He said, “The suggestion that it took Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) over 20 years to get through the parliament is backward thinking. Nigeria lost too much for the failure to pass the PIB on time in terms of revenue, investments, and jobs in the Oil & Gas sector.”

Ajayi also urged lawmakers and stakeholders to prioritize the country’s progress by ensuring timely legislative action, saying that, “We should not wait for another 20 years to do what is right for our country.”

It is instructive to note that the Tax Reform Bills aim to address key fiscal challenges and streamline Nigeria’s taxation framework to foster economic growth and development.
