The University of Abuja (UniAbuja), on Friday, announced the implementation of a ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy that will affect members of staff who fail to report to their duties.
This decision comes amid the ongoing strike by a faction of the institution’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The Vice-Chancellor of UniAbuja, Prof Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, also disclosed that a circular had been issued mandating all academic staff to resume their teaching duties or face unpaid salaries, while adding that it was unethical for staff to expect payment without performing their duties.
He also mentioned that the university management has addressed the concerns raised by the striking ASUU members, including delaying the 2023/2024 promotion process until a new governing council is in place and halting the vice-chancellor recruitment process.
But the ASUU’s UniAbuja chapter chairperson, Sylvanus Ugoh, denied the claims, saying that no resolutions were reached in their recent meeting with the university management and that they have not received any written communication from the management regarding their demands.
The ASUU chapter initiated an indefinite strike on May 2, citing the university management’s violations of establishment laws and the exclusion of ASUU from the UniAbuja Microfinance Bank project, among other grievances.
The union also condemned the advertisement for the vice-chancellor position, asserting it is the governing council’s responsibility, which has been non-existent since President Bola Tinubu dissolved all government parastatals’ councils last June.
But Na’Allah has urged ASUU to suspend the strike, promising to address remaining issues promptly once the governing council is reinstated.
Meanwhile, ASUU has said that it is waiting for the formal communication and resolution of its demands.
