Parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja have been thrown into darkness, following the destruction of the 330-kilovolt Shiroro-Katampe Transmission Line by vandals.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed the ugly incident in a statement made available on Thursday night by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah.
According to the statement, the disruption occurred on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at about 11:43pm when the 330kV Shiroro-Katampe circuit lost supply to the national grid.
Mbah said, “TCN regrets to announce that its 330kV Shiroro–Katampe transmission line was vandalized on Wednesday, 18th December 2024. At about 11:43 PM, the 330kV Shiroro–Katampe circuit lost supply on the grid. A trial reclosure was attempted, but the line tripped again immediately.
A patrol team dispatched from the Abuja Regional Office of TCN discovered that vandals had stolen sections of the conductor between towers T216 and T218, causing the power disruption.
Mbah further stated that a maintenance crew has been mobilized to the site and is working to replace the vandalized power conductor.
“Restoration of bulk power supply through the affected line is expected soon,” Mbah added.
The TCN also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around power transmission infrastructure to prevent future recurrence.
It is instructive to note that the latest incident highlights the persistent challenge of infrastructure vandalism in the country, which continues to disrupt critical services and hamper development efforts.
