***As England wallop Iran 6-2 to send strong message
The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicked off on Nov. 20 and there are 32 teams in the running for 16 spots in the knockout rounds. Only the top two teams will advance from each group.
England are already well on their way to the Round of 16 after dusting off Iran 6-2 in their Group B opener. The USA and Wales both still have life to qualify to the knockout rounds after their opening 1-1 draw which saw Gareth Bale equalize late on a penalty.
On Sunday Ecuador made history by beating host nation Qatar in the opener, and the South Americans are already in pole position for one of the top two spots. The Netherlands joined them at the top of the group after a 2-0 win over African champions Senegal thanks to two late goals.
On Tuesday it will be the turn of Argentina and Lionel Messi, while later in the week, it’ll be Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in action in Group H. Brazil, the most successful nation in World Cup history with five titles, have what on paper seems like a manageable Group G to navigate, while defending champions France have a tricky path in Group D now that they have several injury absences to contend with.
The 2022 World Cup will follow along the lines of recent editions, with a 32-team group stage to whittle the field down to 16 teams — only the top two teams from each of the eight groups survive.
Those 16 group-stage teams will advance to the single-game knockout stages — Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, final — where the winner moves on and the loser goes home. There must be a winner on the day for every knockout-round match, and extra time and penalty kicks will be used, if necessary, to determine the victor.
What time do World Cup games start in Qatar?
There will be up to four matches daily during the group stage staggered throughout the day. The only matches that will overlap are the ones played on the final day of the group-stage phase, and that’s purely for competitive integrity.
Every time zone in the world will get a chance to watch matches at decent times throughout their day. Here’s a breakdown of how the local kickoff times in Qatar translate across various regions around the world.
