32 years after: Babangida admits, says ‘Abiola won June 12 presidential election’

Thirty-two years after, former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has finally revealed that a business mogul, the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Babangida’s revelation was contained in his autobiography, “A Journey in Service”, which was launched in Abuja on Thursday.

The event was graced by President Bola Tinubu, former Heads of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former presidents from African countries, captains of industries, distinguished personalities and Nigerians from different walks of life.

Speaking through the book reviewer and former Vice President Osibanjo, Babangida said that the late MKO Abiola, who contested the presidential election on the platform of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), secured the majority of votes and the geographical spread to be the president.

Babangida also described the historic June 12 election annulment as the most challenging aspect of his life.

He said, “There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements.”

Babangida ,however, said that he was happy that former President Muhammadu Buhari acknowledged that Abiola won the election and honoured him with the greatest national title of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR, which is for presidents.
